And Fables are those short narratives usually attempting to teach their readers a moral lesson. ![]() Sagas accompany ongoing stories of a specific group, a population, a family, or an individual through each of its parts. Epic is that constantly sought nation-defining tale aiming at the glory of its hero. Myths, for instance, have been considered the foundation of various cultures’ narrative practices. Thus, the narrative structures studied here are complementary to a lot of strategies that shaped English literature. Regarding the four narrative genres that we will be exploring in this Unit – Myths, Epic, Sagas, and Fables –, it is possible to notice a movement that allows one narrative frame to overflow into another. Each newborn narrative strategy welcomed a series of potential usages of the English language, encompassing how each English-speaking culture has introduced its own cultures into shared frames of storytelling. Throughout the centuries, stories have been told and retold in several different ways – sometimes to communicate a particular worldview, others to put into play an aesthetic conception, and many times to explore new narrative possibilities.
